Bridget Becker being presented with the Frances Brodie Award

26 Mar 2023 – New Zealand Curling is proud to congratulate Bridget Becker on winning the Frances Brodie Award, for best exemplifying the spirit of curling at the LGT World Women's Championship 2023.

The recipient is selected by the curlers participating in the event, to honour the curler who, "by deed and action in the course of their performance, best exemplified the traditional curling values of skill, honesty, fair play, friendship and sportsmanship."

Frances Brodie was the driving force behind the group which established the first World Ladies Curling Championship in 1979 and chaired the first Official Ladies Committee of the International Curling Federation, later renamed the World Curling Federation.

In 1989, her contribution to world curling was recognised by the Federation with the introduction of this award in her name, which has been presented at the conclusion of each World Women’s Curling Championship since then.

The presentation was made even more special for Bridget by having other members of her family present. Earlier in the day, during the fifth end break of the bronze medal event, her father Peter Becker was formally inducted into the World Curling Hall of Fame – the first New Zealander to receive this honour.

Accompanying Peter was her brother Sean, the only 3-time winner of the Collie Campbell award – the sportsmanship award presented at the World Men's Championship.
